What is Art@DukeEngineering

Art@DukeEngineering is a faculty-staff initiative that seeks to illustrate the many ways in which creativity and knowledge intersect.

“The pursuit of creative solutions involves both the analytical and the inventive. That's why we celebrate art... Just as with dance, painting or music, engineering is a creative enterprise.”

Ravi Bellamkonda, Vinik Dean of Engineering, 2016-2021

In 2019, a volunteer committee of Duke Engineering faculty and staff formed around their shared desire for the school's new Wilkinson Building to include opportunities for engineers to be inspired and empowered by art. The committee pledged to curate an art collection that would reinforce Duke Engineering's reputation as a nexus of knowledge and creativity and reflect the geographic and ethnographic diversity of the Duke Engineering community and the breadth of research pursued within the building's research neighborhoods.

Art@DukeEngineering also sponsors community events like 2022's Light Painting Workshop, which was produced by the Fitzpatrick Institute for Photonics.
